Ground-breaking Plasmascluster Ionic Air Purifier Decimates Bird Flu Virus

Sharp Corporation issued a seemingly ordinary press release on 27 August 2008. But I believe the information therein will one day gain global prominence! Incorporated in its ionic air purifier, the Plasmacluster Ion Technology (more on this in a later post) has just been scientifically proven to be 99.9% effective in eliminating the bird flu virus known as H5N1.

As we have been constantly reminded by the press, bird flu is the prime suspect to cause mankind’s next pandemic. Pandemic sounds terrifying. It is. That’s when a highly contagious virus goes global, in a very negative sense. The 1918 Spanish Flu that killed 50 million people worldwide is the worst pandemic in human history! That was blamed on the H1N1 virus which was only recently confirmed on 5 October 2005 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a bird flu virus.

Do I have your attention now? Is it time to PANIC?

Not just yet. “Only” 245 people infected by the H5N1 virus, as per WHO data as at 10 Sep 2008, have died since 1996 when it first surfaced in China. So what’s the fuss? Scientists monitoring the virus fear that it may mutate into a form that transmits from human to human. To the knowledge of WHO, there has been only one probable case of human-to-human transmission recorded in Thailand in September 2004. Don’t be surprised by the global pandemonium in the event that the dreaded virus mutation actually occurs.

Like other countries, Singapore (where I live) is conscientiously preparing for the worse (more on this in a later post). At the individual level, we should start making preparations too.

Ok, so what’s all this got to do with Sharp’s ionic air purifier. Is it not just another ionic air purifier? Yes, because it takes care of the usual pollutants (dust, dirt, smoke, dander, pollen, cuisine odors, pet odors, allergens etc) that contaminate the air that we breathe and live in. But if we can get protection from all these and more in one ionic air purifier, especially one that is a tested defense shield against a potentially deadly virus, why not? And that is precisely what Sharp is telling us; get the whole package with their Plasmacluster Ion Technology.

Obviously, for the value-conscious, the next logical question would be “yes, that makes a whole lot of sense but at what cost”? At no extra cost, Sharp claims! Sharp contends that over a 5-year period, it is cheaper than any other competing ionic air purifier. A case of over-delivering by Sharp? But, how is this possible in this nothing-is-for-free world?

With the Plasmacluster Ionic Air Purifier Model FP-N40CX as the basis, Sharp contends that it is great value for money as there is no filter replacement costs for the first 5 years. At first sight, the typical competitor’s upfront cost of US$160 looks cheap compared to Sharp’s US$399. But add in the annual replacement filter replacement costs of US$100 and the total outlay for the competing ionic air purifier comes to US$560.

If anyone has relevant numbers on Sharp and the competitors, your feedback will be much appreciated. Please drop me a note if you have actual experience.

In the meantime, I will study the Sharp Plasmacluster Ion Technology more closely. Especially since bird flu is still not quite at pandemic proportions.

Don’t let other things in life lead you to procrastinate. Experience is a good teacher. Like a horror movie, pandemic fears spread across Asia for months. People shunned crowded places like shopping centres, some stayed away from work, others became unofficial health “authorities” passing decrees on hygiene standards. Anyone who sneezed in public without a N95 face mask found himself standing alone in a split second. It was the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) virus. Originating in Asia in 2003, it eventually infected 8,096 people around the world and resulted in 774 fatalities. As always, being prepared is half the battle won.

Watch this space as we track exciting developments in our pursuit of safe, pure and clean air with nothing more than an ionic air purifier.

How Understanding The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Solar Power Will Help You Decide On Whether To Invest In It

Solar System Efficiency

If you are considering installing a solar power system on your property, you will need to understand the advantages and disadvantages of solar power.  Understanding the efficiency of your system is a key element.  Though the sun will produce an unlimited amount of energy, each solar power system will only be able to convert a percentage of that energy into usable electricity.  Panels have historically had very low efficiency rates.  If you want to install a system on your property, you need to know how that will affect your energy needs.

Flow Control System

Solar systems are created of many components besides panels, one of which is a flow control system. These systems will not only improve the efficiency of your solar power, but it will keep down the amount of wear that is inflicted on your panels.  Older solar panels for solar heating systems can take a long time to heat up.If you use a flow control system that is properly configured, it will cut back the volume of water to be heated and capture the energy more efficiently.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Solar Power for Consumers

The advantages and disadvantages of solar power products depend on what type of system you are trying to install.  The first concern you should have is the efficiency of the system and its average lifespan.  The longer that your solar panel will be in service, the more money that it will save you.  Properly installed solar water heating systems should be able to last for a minimum of twenty years.

The statistic that you want to look at when considering efficiency is the dollars per watt.  The advantages and disadvantages of solar power are slightly different if you take used solar panels into account as well.  Used panels can save you money up front, although they may not be guaranteed for as long.  Keep in mind that the size of your property and the energy uses will be considerations when you make your initial purchase.  The more power you need to generate, the more money you will pay initially.

Long Term Investment

If you want to use a solar power system to power an entire home, especially a large one, you will need to brace yourself for a large initial cost.  Cost is one of the advantages and disadvantages of solar power products.  You will spend money initially, however after that you will begin to see a return as you will no longer have to pay for electricity.  Solar panels are a long term investment in your finances and in the health of the planet.  As a renewable and clean energy source, they are benefiting more than just your family.

Most solar panel systems have little to no maintenance required if the installation is properly completed.  It is adviseable to have a professional help with the initial installation, because the adjustments can be complicated.  If you plan on installing your system, make sure that the instructions are clear and complete.

Waterproofing techniques for basement floors.

Why is basement floor waterproofing so often overlooked, when if it was done when the basement was built, there would be fewer problems with seepage and flooding? A basement can be so much more than just a convenient place for storing junk! Now, people realize the potential of this space for something much more such as extra living space, family rooms and bedrooms.

After many years drains can become plugged with mud and causes water problems to occur.

The soil will become too saturated if water from the roof is not directed away from the foundation. In the process of the house settling, the walls will often crack, protective coatings which are on the outside biodegrades and drainage systems will be filled in with silt. A leakage in the basement might result from all these problems. Natural pressure from the soil against the foundation will cause flowing ground water to enter through any cracks or crevices in your foundation. The higher the level of water, the greater the pressure. In turn this water, under increased pressure, seeks entry through cracks and crevices in the walls and floors, and concrete is no match for water pressure. Without proper preparation,  torrential rains could cause flooding in basements or crawlspaces.

A pressure relief system can eliminate water that leaks into your basement. Whenever there happens to be a power outage due to a rainstorm, it is very likely that the primary pumps will not work, and that may cause somewhat of an inconvenience. Over time this pressure increases until the moisture is literally pushed through the floor or wall (often called bleeding). Corners and joints that connect the floor and the wall are the most likely candidates for seepage.

If you think that water is comming out of an isolated area, you can lower the water table and the underground hydrostatic pressure by using an easy-to-install sump pump below your floor table. Water vapor will go right through concrete since it is porous. A wet or damp basement due to excessive moisture will cause carpeting to rot, allows mold to grow and makes the basement smell musty.

One fix for this problem is to use some of the quality sealants now available to the average home owner. It is often possible to paint them with either the roller or spray method.

A normal job may entail:

– first the floor of the area being worked on must be prepared to make it smooth and remove any excess material
– making sure the basement floor is as dry as possible, hiring large fans or heaters if necessary.
– Assuring that the wall/floor junctions are sealed off.
– Filling in all crevices and bends which are especially visible.
– Priming the floor when the product calls for the use of a primer.
– Use 2 to 3 coats as needed to top coat the floor with the final product.

A high quality product will result in basement floor waterproofing that can last for years and years. Permaflex is one type of sealant that will give a complete and permanent waterproofing for a basement floor. This indoor waterproofing system claims to permanently seal you lower level floor at considerably less cost than other systems.

Basement Mold – Do You Know What Is Lurking In Your Basement?

Why is  mold in the basement so common? The answer is rather simple, actually. Most of the houses that experience the occurrence of basement mold are likely to have leaks in their basements or unseen water entry ways. This wet or humid environment is ideal for the growth of mold.  In fact, many basements have mold, but the homeowners never even know it!

What we have learned about mold is the fact that it thrives in moist, damp environments and that the darkness further creates a great place for mold to grow in. So what better place than in a damp and dark basement to settle in, right?

Once you spot even just a small amount of mold in your basement you should begin looking for a leak in your pipes or somewhere that water might be seeping through into your basement. Check all the edges and corners as well as around the water heater and all the joints on your pipes. The sooner you find these leaks, get them fixed and kill the mold that is already there, the lower the chances of it spreading to other places in your home.

Having just a small amount of basement mold visible to the eye shouldn’t make you feel complacent about the situation. The thing is, there might be hidden mold behind the walls, under the carpeting and even in the ceiling. Mold can spread through spores so once you have it in one spot, it can be spread to other areas. If there is a place that is attractive for mold growth, it’s a sure bet that the mold spores will find it.

So when you do a check, make sure that you cover everything. Getting rid of just the visible mold in your basement will only be a temporary fix if you don’t also fix the water problem. You might consider getting a dehumidifier once you get rid of the existing mold and fix the leaks as basements, by nature, can be rather humid even without leaking water.

Mold can be rather persistent and, since it likes dark places, it can “hide” in areas where you might not find it so it is important that you take the steps to create an unfriendly environment for it. Keeping things neat and organized as well as stored in sealed containers can help a lot.  If you have anything with fabric such as tents, or the cushions from patio furniture, you should check these periodically for mildew as once a bit of dampness gets into these fabrics, storing them in the basement can be a disaster for them and once fabrics get mildew or mold, you are unlikely to ever be able to get it out.

It’s no fun having basement mold, but if you take action when you first notice it than you will run much less of a risk of your mold problem getting out of hand. Not only is mold unpleasant to smell and look at, but it can also have adverse health effects so getting rid of it fast should be a priority.

How To Repair Cigarette Burns In Carpet

Who do you hire to repair cigarette burns in carpet? A good carpet cleaner will usually be able to do it for you. On the other hand, why not fix them yourself? Here are the simple steps to take.

Light Cigarette Burns

If there isn’t a hole, but just a surface burn, you are in luck. This repair can be an easy one. Just get a small pair of scissors and start snipping off the blackened or brown ends of the burnt fibers. If the damage isn’t too deep, you may not even notice the small depression left. You can hide it further by trimming the tufts around the burn, so the spot blends into the surrounding area. If what is left is still too visible, you may want to try the method for repairing holes.

Cigarette Holes In Carpet

Unless you grab that lit cigarette within seconds after it drops, it will usually burn a hole in your carpet. What do you do then? To start with, you can improve the appearance of the spot by trimming away the burnt ends of the fibers, as described above. Of course, you are still left with a noticeable hole.

You need to fill this hole with new fibers from the same carpet to make it invisible. You can snip some tufts from any leftover piece of the carpet if some was saved during installation. Otherwise, you have to take them from the existing carpet. Find an area that is fairly well hidden, like behind a door. You can also take some pieces from several different places, so there is no visible thin spot anywhere.

Carefully coat the bottom of the burn hole with waterproof glue. Using tweezers, push the carpet fibers into the glue until the hole is full. When in doubt, overfill it – you can always remove a few fibers later if necessary. Cover the spot with a clean white cloth or plain white paper towel and place a heavy weight on it (books or heavy lamp will work). Allow the glue to dry for several hours.

Once it is dry, you can fluff up the fibers by vacuuming, to see how well you made the repair. It should be difficult if not impossible to spot the damage. If a few of the new fibers are standing up too high above the rest, you can carefully trim these, and then you are done. For less than a dollar’s worth of glue you can repair cigarette burns and other carpet burns.

Backpack Vacuum Cleaners – Small and Very Easy To Use

Backpack vacuum cleaners are designed to make one move swiftly while vacuuming the house. Just like canister vacuums, backpack vacuum cleaners also effectively suck dirt and clean the place. However, the main difference is that backpack vacuum cleaners are designed to be put on one’s back for the user to be able to move freely and easily. These vacuum cleaners have straps which would hold in place on the person’s back and shoulders.

Although in backpack vacuum cleaners, one has to carry the whole cleaner on the back which includes the heaviest part which is the motor, it won’t be that hard and heavy to carry. The gravitational design of these cleaners guarantees one to have a good balance while carrying them. Also, the backpack vacuum cleaners are made in such a way that they would fit in the back of a person. In addition to this, they have cooling mechanisms that works for the safety of the user.

Many people say that using backpack cleaners is better than using the traditional ones. This is because, with backpack cleaners, you can move easily and faster, thus, making you cover a greater space at a little amount of time. Besides, you can walk, or even run, while the vacuum cleaner is on your back. Information on: Best Rated Vacuum Cleaners.

Where To Use a Backpack Vacuum Cleaner

Actually, ack vacuum cbackpleaners could be used anywhere. Although, the main purpose of this cleaner is to clean hard to reach areas and those with little space.

Some places where backpack vacuum cleaners are in demand are the aisles in a movie theater. Because there is a little space in the aisle and also in between chairs, these vacuum cleaners are most effective due to its easy handling and mobility purposes.

Also, in vehicles like trains, buses, as well as the subways, backpack vacuum cleaners are the best effective way to remove the dirt. This is also true when we speak about the classroom wit all the chairs and tables in them.

Another one is the airplane. Since the airplanes are carpeted with narrow spaces, it would be very handy to have a backpack vacuum cleaner. Hallways with carpets, as well as those which do not have, would be easier to clean with this vacuum.

And last but not the least, the stairs. It is very difficult sometimes to clean the stairs with the traditional vacuum cleaners, but with backpack vacuum cleaners, you’ll sure find stairs easier and faster to clean.

How Do Critics Base Their Air Purifier Review?

Ever since the popularity of air purifiers came to rise, a lot of trade names have surfaced in the marketplace. Brand Names are found in a diversity of choices; and til now, manufacturers have been generating more and more varieties of air purifiers. Some manufacturers have produced purifiers with different colors that can agree with your homes interior.

Others have crafted the purifier systems in assorted shapes and designs. Others would even boast of the quality built into the innovative piece of equipment they create. But surrounded with all the hoopla in the air purifier world, how do we really make out which one to select? Well, we can only verify which one is most beneficial if we read an air purifier review.

Air Purifier Review: The Make

An air purifier review is first off based on the make. Usually, a critic will always view what brand you are featuring. If it’s a widely renowned brand name and if it has been in the appliance industry for quite some time, that can be a good point for the critic to evaluate it at a loftier rate.

For example, an Ionic air purifier review would rate quite well in the marketplace because this has been a long standing trade name in the industry; so it is only “reasonable” for the critics to rate the item that way. If you happen to notice, even in other household appliance items, critics invariably evaluate a good trademarked item at a healthier rank. No matter which fashion you look at it, it is always a fact that reviewers will rank an item by the name of the product. Thus to know if a certain product is really good, you have got to try it and test it for yourself.

Air Purifier Review: The Quality

Virtually all of the credible critics take into account the quality of a feature to distinguish if it can be valued higher in an air purifier review. More frequently than not, professionals are presented an opportunity to work with a decided product and try it at home. They use it for a good number of days and see how well it works for them. If they are gratified with the benefits they experience from a certain purifier make, then the rates would plainly go high. But if they are disappointed with the operation of a particular make, then you can only expect the Air Purifier ratings to go down. That is why, it is essential for manufacturers to gratify trustworthy critics so they can get a glowing endorsement from them.

Air Purifier Review: People’s Choice

An air purifier review can be derived from the buyers conclusions. If more and more individuals declare that the item is quality, then individuals would certainly go for the purchase and examine it for themselves. If a certain make captures the heart of many, that can be a very great “plus point” because you receive the endorsement from the users themselves. All The Same, it is always dependable to try the ware yourself and ascertain if it really brings good benefits to you and your home.

Sauna Construction Tips

It takes careful planning to build a sauna from scratch.

Here’s an overview of the steps:

• buy or design your plans

• find/buy the wood

• accurately measure and cut the wood or have a professional do it for you

• assemble all the pieces, including a heater, bench and door

Choose A Location

Location is an important consideration when building a sauna. It’s the main thing that will influence your sauna design. For example,

• Will you convert an existing room?

• Will it be freestanding?

• Do you want it inside or outside your house?

• Will it be in the city or country?

After your location is chosen, you’ll have to decide what kind of sauna heater you’re going to use.

Depending on your chosen location, you may not have much of a choice.

Choosing A Sauna Heater

Electric sauna heaters are the most popular choice. Obviously, you’ll have to have access to electricity if you want to use one.

If you plan to build a sauna in the country, a wood sauna heater may be your only option.

You can buy purchase a gas sauna heater, but they are more expensive.

Professional installation will be a requirement and the sauna will need to be ventilated. Gas heaters also require more clearance than an electric heater.

Before making any final decisions, find out what the local building codes are. For example, there may be an ordinance for your community that restricts the use of a wood burning sauna heater.

Sauna Construction

If you want to convert an existing room into a home made sauna, you’ll have to take protective measures against the moisture that’ll come from the sauna. The room will need to be properly insulated and include a vapor barrier to guard against possible damage.

You’ll have to find-and-buy or special order the wood you’re going to use, then you’ll have to carefully measure and cut it (or have a pro handle that part).

Unless you purchase tongue-and-groove lumber, you’ll have to make tongue-and-groove joints in the sides of the wood for strength and tight seals, and it takes a special tool for that.

Of course you’ll also need a door for your sauna. Manufacturers sell them in different shapes and sizes.

You can also buy a bench for your sauna or you can build your own.

It’s very doable, but if you’re not skilled with your hands then building your own sauna will be a major task.

Building a Solar Collector with Solar Energy Plans

Proper solar energy plans that you can follow step by step are the first things you will need if you are interested in building your own solar collector. Although making your own solar collector may sound difficult to do, it is not really that much of a chore at all if you have good solar energy plans that you can follow.

The First Step

Before you do anything else, you need to make sure that you clearly understand the difference between solar collectors and panels. When considering any solar energy, it is profoundly important to realize first that, although solar collectors absorb solar energy in the form of heat, is the solar panels that are actually turning solar energy into electricity.

Another difference is that solar collectors make use of the greenhouse effect. On the other hand, solar panels convert radiant energy into electricity and today are only really cost effective in remote off-grid areas with a price of about $5/watt.

Materials

There is quite a list of materials that you are going to need for your solar energy plans. These will include two rolls of 50-foot 20” aluminum flashing, four 0.06 thick 4×8 sheets of Kalwall, twenty 1×4x8 pine boards with few or no knots, four 1/2×4x8 CDX plywood, four 1×4x8 sheets of insulation with an R value 5 or better, clear silicon caulking, aluminum foil, some felt paper, one gallon of roofing tar, one gallon of oil base paint, angle irons for mounting, sixteen 1/4×3 lag bolts, sixteen 1/4×1 1/2”  machine bolts with nuts and washers, 1 ¼”  and 2”  drywall screws, one pound of 1 ½”  galvanized nails with small heads, and plumbing supplies.

The actual process that will take place will depend on what specific solar energy plans you have. However, the advantages that you will gain will typically remain the same, regardless of the particular plans that you are using.

Advantages

There can be very serious advantages to using solar energy. Should you be fortunate enough to be able to invest $2,000 and a few weeks of labor, you will be able to save in excess of $50,000 in hot water and home heating charges. Since 1,000 to 2,000 gallons of number two oil are used by an average household in the United States each year, solar heating can be a very desirable alternative; and, if it is not used wastefully, your energy bills may be trimmed by as much as fifty percent. You might even be able to eliminate other fuels entirely, which is certainly the ultimate goal to strive for.
